A Four-Season Destination Vacation Area

Silver City, in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, is the home of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, located on the shores of Lake Superior!

Silver City is a friendly town that is still primarily wilderness. Lodging from cabins to hotels, restaurants boasting home-cooked meals, and small shops offering folk art, antiques, pottery, glass jewelry, photography, and souvenirs dot the area. As you visit our shops, you may even meet one of the local artisans.

With the Porkies to the west and Lake Superior to the north, wilderness is awaiting your discovery. Abandoned mines, abundant waterfalls, and inland lakes and streams take you back in time as you explore the area. Even a plane wreckage is hidden in the forest. The deer can be viewed romping about the area year-round. Bring your binoculars and witness the soaring eagles, the small chickadees, owls, or even an otter! You won’t need those binoculars to see the great black bear that still roam the area freely.

Spring

Spring blooms in vibrant colors and the waterfalls roar to life. It is a photographer’s paradise and a rockhound’s dream! If fishing is your bait, cast your line for lake trout, chinook, walleye, and whitefish, to name a few. Fish the Big Lake or the over 1,200 miles of streams and rivers or 542 inland lakes of the area.

Summer

Hiking, biking, canoeing, and kayaking are popular throughout summer. Evenings slowly give way to majestic sunsets over Lake Superior. Enjoy the view from our sandy beaches or from the peaks throughout the Park. Kids enjoy the mini-golf range. For the more advanced golfers, there are six courses nearby. The Park offers many interpretive hikes for all ages throughout the year.

Fall

Rich gold, orange, and red grace our forests throughout autumn. In a land free from pollution and the invasion of man, the colors are indescribable. After the leaves have fallen, the hunting seasons begin, and whitetail deer and bear provide the challenge you are looking for.

Winter

Winter activities include snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross-country and downhill skiing, and snowboarding! Ski the groomed wilderness trails and view the habitat of the wildlife. The Park offers guided snowshoe hikes and lantern-light skiing. Snowmobilers enjoy the well groomed trails. Silver City is located on Trail #1, which will lead you to the scenic Lake of the Clouds, or Trail #11, one of the best trails in the U.P., through the Park. You also have direct access to the trails that lead to the Copper Country, Bergland, and more.

If you are looking to take a step back in time, just to relax, enjoy nature and view the majestic sunsets, don’t miss your opportunity to inhale that breath of fresh air in Silver City, Michigan!
